Total cinema is a myth, and myths arrive first
In 1946 the French critic André Bazin published a short essay called The Myth of Total Cinema. Its target was the standard history of the medium, in which cinema arrives by accident: a series of tinkerers, Marey, Muybridge, Edison, the Lumière brothers, stumble independently onto pieces of moving pictures, and the pieces eventually add up. Bazin rejected that order of events. He pointed to Edison's collaborator W.K.L. Dickson, who sketched plans for synchronized sound and color decades before either was achievable. The idea of a complete, unmediated reproduction of reality came first. The machinery spent a century catching up to a fantasy that was already fully formed.
He called it a myth on purpose. In a companion essay, The Ontology of the Photographic Image (ontology, here, meaning the fundamental nature of a photograph, as an object and a process), Bazin traces the impulse back to Egyptian embalming: art, in his account, has always been a defense against time, a way of holding a moment past its disappearance. Photography's automatism, the fact that the image forms without an artist's hand shaping it, gave that old defense an unprecedented tool. Cinema extended the defense through duration. Total cinema is what it would look like finished: sound, color, depth and scale, with no apparatus left for a viewer to notice.
It never finishes. Solve for sound and color is still missing. Solve for color and depth is still missing. Solve for depth with stereoscopic 3D and the glasses are still there, reminding everyone of the trick. Every closed gap opens the next one. Bazin described a horizon that recedes at the same speed you walk toward it.

Bazin died on November 11, 1958, the night after shooting began on François Truffaut's The 400 Blows, a film Bazin had mentored Truffaut through for years and which Truffaut dedicated to him. What English readers get as What Is Cinema? was assembled after his death by his colleagues at Cahiers du cinéma, the magazine Bazin had co-founded in 1951 with Jacques Doniol-Valcroze and Joseph-Marie Lo Duca. The French original appeared as four volumes between 1958 and 1962, gathering essays written over the previous two decades. Hugh Gray translated a selection into the two English volumes that became the standard classroom text.
His own critical taste, the deep-focus long take over montage, Renoir and Wyler and the Welles of Citizen Kane, runs through both essays as much as any claim about hardware. Total cinema, read this way, is as much a justification for the camera he already preferred as it is a prediction about the one that had not been built yet.
c. 1895 → 1927 DreamedSynchronized sound and color
W.K.L. Dickson, Edison's collaborator, sketched a camera and projector built for both sound and color before either was remotely achievable.
Optical sound reached commercial cinema in 1927 with The Jazz Singer. Color remained the unsolved half of Dickson's sketch for another decade.
1927 → late 1930s DeliveredSound, then color
Both arrived roughly a decade apart. Neither arrived with depth.
1950s AttemptedStereoscopic depth
3D cinema promised to remove the last flat surface between an audience and the image. It required glasses, gave many viewers headaches, and was mostly abandoned within a decade.
1954 → 2025 Attempted, then revivedA larger, sharper negative (VistaVision)
Paramount introduced VistaVision in 1954, debuting with White Christmas at Radio City Music Hall. Running standard 35mm film horizontally through the camera instead of vertically roughly doubled the negative area, producing a sharper widescreen image without CinemaScope's anamorphic distortion. Only a handful of theaters received true horizontal 8-perforation prints. Almost everyone else saw a standard vertical reduction print, the same shortfall Nolan's crew would rediscover seventy years later.
Paramount dropped VistaVision as a production format within about seven years as finer-grained film stock and cheaper anamorphic systems produced comparable results. The camera itself did not disappear. Industrial Light and Magic kept using it for effects work on Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Jurassic Park, because the larger negative held up better through repeated compositing passes. VistaVision returned to English-language feature production in 2024 with Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, then again in 2025 with Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. Four cinemas projected that film in native horizontal VistaVision; IMAX 70mm and dual-laser presentations carried its 1.50:1 image into many of the same rare 1.43:1 venues now showing The Odyssey.
1967 → 1970 Multiplied, then consolidatedMany screens become one enormous frame
At Expo 67 in Montreal, In the Labyrinth used five cameras and five synchronized screens to surround the audience with a single experience. The effect drew more than a million visitors; the machinery was difficult enough to point toward a different solution.
Roman Kroitor and Graeme Ferguson helped turn that multi-screen ambition into one camera, one projector and one vast image. Tiger Child, shown at Expo 70 in Osaka, was the first IMAX film. The format that would carry Nolan's image began by simplifying an apparatus that had become too visible.
2003 → 2022 Attempted, againDigital 3D and high frame rate
James Cameron and Vince Pace spent roughly seven years developing the Fusion Camera System, first used on Cameron's 2003 IMAX documentary Ghosts of the Abyss, then on Avatar in 2009. Avatar revived stereoscopic 3D commercially at a scale the 1950s format never reached and became the highest-grossing film of its time.
The revival receded on its own schedule. By 2021, 3D represented 7% of global box office, down from 21% in 2017. Cameron pushed further anyway: Avatar: The Way of Water used a high frame rate, up to 48 frames per second, for its underwater and action scenes. The pursuit was older than digital 3D: Douglas Trumbull's Showscan had photographed and projected 70mm film at 60 frames per second as early as 1978, mostly in special venues. In Japan, several screenings of The Way of Water ran into technical trouble and one cinema reportedly dropped from 48 to 24 frames per second. Depth and motion arrived again, with a technical asterisk attached.
2008 → 2026 Dreamed, then deliveredA feature shot entirely on IMAX film
Nolan opened The Dark Knight with an IMAX helicopter shot in 2008 and expanded the amount of IMAX footage across the films that followed. The cameras remained loud enough to make synchronized dialogue at that scale difficult.
The Keighley camera and a newly engineered sound-dampening housing let The Odyssey become the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, including synchronized dialogue scenes at scale. Eighteen years between the dream and the machine.
2026 → open Still openDistribution
The Odyssey was shot so every frame fills IMAX's full 1.43:1 image. Forty-one cinemas on Earth opened it that way, on real 70mm film. The distribution trade-off was already built into modern IMAX: DMR began adapting Hollywood features for the format in 2002, and digital projection arrived in multiplexes in 2008, expanding the network while most new screens used the wider 1.90:1 frame.
The camera named for two people who spent their careers on this exact problem
IMAX cameras have been loud since the format existed, built first for vistas and spectacle. Nolan expanded their use after The Dark Knight, while the noise kept synchronized dialogue at scale difficult. A full feature shot on IMAX film meant solving that noise, and for eighteen years nobody had.
After Oppenheimer, Nolan's crew and IMAX built a muffling housing for the camera, called the blimp on set. The camera itself was named the Keighley, after Patricia and David Keighley, two IMAX executives who spent decades pushing the format toward this exact point. David Keighley died three weeks after finishing his work on The Odyssey. The film is dedicated to him.
What followed from that one fix: cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema exposed roughly 2.1 million feet of 65mm film, about 640 kilometres, at about a dollar fifty a foot, close to $3,000,000 in film stock inside a $250,000,000 production. IMAX built a mirror rig so an actor could look into a reflection of the lens instead of the camera body several feet from their eyeline. Matt Damon has described how naturally that worked once the crew tried it. FotoKem, in Burbank, struck the 70mm prints. It is the last lab on Earth still equipped to do it.
The image most people paid for was already smaller than the one Nolan built
Every shot in The Odyssey fills IMAX's tallest ratio, 1.43:1, nearly square next to an ordinary rectangle. Nolan has described the effect as removing the frame from a viewer's peripheral vision, closer to stereoscopic depth than any 3D format managed, without the glasses.
Almost nobody saw that version. Roughly 41 cinemas worldwide are built to project real 70mm IMAX film at 1.43:1. Everywhere else, the image was remastered for whatever rectangle the local screen used: standard digital IMAX, Dolby Cinema, a large-format commercial screen, an ordinary auditorium. Nolan and van Hoytema call the process center-punching, composing every shot so the essential information survives being cropped into a wider frame, even as the frame itself disappears.
An invisible screen still has to decide what to show
Bazin wanted the apparatus to disappear because he trusted what disappearing revealed: reality, held onto a little longer against time. A later generation of theorists, particularly Jean-Louis Baudry, argued the opposite is just as true. The more invisible a camera becomes, the harder it is to notice the choices made on the way to invisibility: what was cast, what was cut, whose story got the budget. Total cinema leaves that argument exactly where it was, with the frame just moved a little further out of view.

This rupture happened inside the same magazine Bazin had co-founded in 1951. The writers he brought up, Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer, Rivette, built the auteur theory (the idea that a film's real signature is the director's sensibility) largely out of his taste for directors like Renoir and Welles. After 1968, a new editorial line at the same magazine, led by Jean-Louis Comolli and Jean Narboni, published "Cinéma, idéologie, critique" in October 1969, arguing that a realist aesthetic which hides its own construction does ideological work regardless of intent. Jean-Louis Baudry's "Ideological Effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus," first published in Cinéthique in 1970, pushed the same argument into psychoanalytic territory.
Bazin's disappearing camera stopped being an achievement and became, for this generation of his own magazine, the thing most in need of explaining.
The eighteen-year gap between Nolan's first IMAX footage and the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras is public record, confirmed by Nolan, by IMAX, and by the film's own credits. So is the Keighley camera, its muffling housing, the dedication to David Keighley, and the count of cinemas that opened the film at 1.43:1 on 70mm film.
Whether closing the dialogue gap brings total cinema meaningfully closer, or simply moves the unfinished part of the myth from the camera to the projection booth, is an interpretation. Bazin's own essay treats the goal as permanently out of reach. Measured against that essay, distribution looks like the newest name for the same old shortfall.
The next test of the pattern is whether 70mm projection, now down to a handful of working labs and screens, gets rebuilt faster than someone finds the next gap to dream about.
